A 150-Year-Old Piece of Ottoman Local History
This is an authentic bronze Mukhtar (Village/Neighborhood Headman) seal dated Hijri 1291 (1874-1875 AD). It represents the multicultural administrative structure of the late Ottoman Empire.
The Inscription Deciphered:
Muhtar-ı Evvel: The First Headman.
Hristiyan-ı Der Mahalle-i Kuzguncuk: Christian Community of the Kuzguncuk Neighborhood.
Tab-i Kula: Affiliated with the Kula district (Manisa).
Year 1291: Dated 1874 AD.
Significance:
Kuzguncuk is famous for its history of coexistence between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. This seal specifically belonged to the First Headman of the Christian community in that area, making it a unique artifact for collectors of genealogical, administrative, or religious history.
